catholicism
Catholic
This word comes from a Greek word meaning "universal"
and may, therefore, be used to apply to all Christians. When it is used
this way, it usually begins with a little c. Sometimes it is used with
a capital C when the writer means the Roman Catholic Church.

Protestant
Protestant
"Protestantism" is less a denomination than a general branch of
Christianity encompassing numerous denominations and a wide theological
spectrum ranging from conservative to liberal.
Protestantism originated in the 16th century Reformation, and most
modern Protestant denominations can trace their heritage to one of the
major movements that sprung up in the 16th century. Presbyterians are
indebted to John Calvin and Reformed theology, as well as to John Knox
and the Church of Scotland. Anglicans and Episcopalians trace their
heritage to the Church of England that resulted from King Henry VIII's
break from the authority of Rome. Evangelicalism (and to a slightly
lesser degree, Methodism) is indebted to Pietism, a 17th century
Protestant movement emphasizing a holy life, individual study of the
scriptures, and better training of ministers.

buddhism
buddhism
Buddhism is a variety of teachings, sometimes described as a
religion
or way of life that attempts to identify the causes of human suffering
and offer various ways that are claimed to end, or ease suffering. It
is said by some to be a body of
philosophies influenced by the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama, known as
Gautama Buddha. It is said by others to be a set of teachings to guide one to directly experiencing
reality. Many scholars say that there is not one Buddhism but many Buddhisms, and the latest edition of one textbook is retitled
Buddhist Religions. Buddhism is also known as
Buddha Dharma or Dhamma, which means roughly the "teachings of the Awakened One" in
Sanskrit and
Pali, languages of ancient
Buddhist texts. Buddhism began around the 5th century BCE in
India with the teachings of
Siddhartha Gautama, commonly referred to as "the Buddha".

Muslims believe that God
revealed the
Qur'an to Muhammad, God's
final prophet, and regard the Qur'an and the
Sunnah (words and deeds of Muhammad) as the fundamental sources of Islam. They do not regard Muhammad as the founder of a new religion, but as the restorer of the original monotheistic faith of
Abraham,
Moses,
Jesus, and other
prophets. Islamic tradition holds that
Jews and
Christians distorted the revelations God gave to these prophets by either altering the text, introducing a false interpretation, or both.
Almost all Muslims belong to one of two major denominations, the
Sunni (85%) and
Shi'a (15%).

judaism
judaism
Judaism is the oldest of the monotheistic faiths. It affirms the
existence of one God, Yahweh, who entered into covenant with the
descendants of Abraham, God's chosen people. Judaism's holy writings
reveal how God has been present with them throughout their history.
These writings are known as the Torah, specifically the five books of
Moses, but most broadly conceived as the Hebrew Scriptures
(traditionally called the Old Testament by Christians) and the
compilation of oral tradition known as the Talmud (which includes the
Mishnah, the oral law).

scientology
Scientology is a
body of beliefs and related practices initially created by
American speculative fiction author
L. Ron Hubbard. The major organization promoting Scientology is the

a hierarchical organization founded by Hubbard, while independent
groups using Hubbard's materials are collectively referred to as the
Free Zone. Hubbard developed Scientology teachings in 1952 as a successor to his earlier
self-help system,
Dianetics. Hubbard later characterized Scientology as an "applied religious philosophy" and the basis for a new
religion. Scientology encompasses
"auditing", a spiritual rehabilitation philosophy and techniques, and covers topics such as
morals,
ethics,
Purification (a type of
detoxification),
education and
